Transportation Safety Facts
Students must be at the bus stop prior to the buses scheduled time of arrival as buses operate on a time schedule and does not permit waiting for late students. Drivers will not be expected to go back and pick up students who fail to make it to their bus stop on time.
Please do not discuss bus problems with the driver while he/she is on the route. Please call the district office at 862-4171 to report any concerns.
Talk to your child about the following safety rules:
· Avoid the danger zone around the bus – Danger zone is the area 15 feet around the bus.
· Do not pick up anything that dropped near the bus – the bus driver might not see you.
· Be careful whenever getting on or off the bus.
· Always follow the bus driver’s directions.
Chapter 3301-83 of the Administrative Code - Designated Place of Safety. In section 3301-83-08 C2, additional language states: “Pupils must wait in a location clear of traffic and away from the bus stop.” Compliance with these rules is mandated under Ohio Revised Code 4511.76.
ALL STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED A DESIGNATED PLACE OF SAFETY:
A.M. - STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT THEIR DESIGNATED PLACE OF SAFETY AND STAY THERE UNTIL SIGNALED BY THE DRIVER TO GET ON THE BUS.
P.M. - STUDENTS ARE TO REMAIN AT THEIR DESIGNATED PLACE OF SAFETY UNTIL THE BUS LEAVES THE BUS STOP.
Safety rules for getting onto the bus: Students are to remain on their residence side of the street at their designated place of safety until the bus comes to a complete stop. They are to look at the driver for the signal to board the bus. The driver will drop their hand down, if students are crossing, they need look both ways before entering the roadway and when it is safe, they are to continue to cross to get on the bus and students on the right side of the bus may board and all go directly to their assigned seat.
Safety rules for getting off the bus: If crossing in front of the bus, students must walk 10 steps or more along the side of the roadway to the front of the bus and wait for the driver’s hand signal. After the driver drops their hand, the student must walk to the center of the road and stop to check traffic on their own before crossing. When it is safe, they are to go directly to their designated place of safety and remain there until the bus leaves. If the driver blows the horn, that means danger and they need to re-check traffic. If the student sees nothing then they are to look back at the driver for further instructions. Students on the right hand side of the bus will need to remain at their designated place of safety until the bus leaves.
Warning lights on the bus means: Amber (yellow) – bus preparing to stop; Red – bus is stopped for pickup or discharge of students. Motor vehicles must stay stopped until the red lights are off and the bus resumes motion. It is a violation of ORC 4511.75 to pass a school bus while picking up or discharging students with a fine as high as $500 and a possible driver license suspension.
Sometimes a school bus driver must do a turn-around. The bus will have its four-way hazard lights and backup lights on as it prepares to back into a side street or driveway to turn around. Use caution when approaching a bus in the process of completing a turn-around as you may be in the bus driver's blind spot. Please be patient when following a school bus.
