Transportation Safety Facts

Student bus pass and information have been mailed. Please allow 15 minutes prior to pick up time as stated on the bus pass for the first couple of weeks, after that students shall be at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to designated time of pick up.   Talk to your child about the following safety rules:
·         Avoid the danger zone around the bus – Danger zone is the area 10 feet around the bus.
·         Don’t try to pick up something dropped near the bus – the bus driver might not see you
·         Remember that some motorists don’t always stop for a stopped school bus, and be careful whenever getting on or off the bus
 ·         Always follow the bus driver’s directions
Safety rules for crossing the roadway to get on the bus: Students are to remain on their side of the roadway and watch for the driver’s signal. When signaled it is okay to cross, students are to look both ways before entering the roadway and if it is safe then they are to continue to cross to get on the bus and go directly to their assigned seat.
Safety rules for crossing the roadway when exiting the bus: Students must walk 10 steps or more along the side of the roadway to the front of the bus and wait for the driver’s hand signal. After the driver drops their hand, the student must walk to the center of the road and stop to check traffic on their own before crossing. If it is safe, they are to go directly to their designated place of safety and remain there until the bus leaves. If the driver blows the horn, that means danger and re-check traffic. If the student sees nothing then they are to look back at the driver for further instructions.
Warning lights on the bus means: Amber (yellow) – bus preparing to stop; Red – bus is stopped for pickup or discharge of students. Motor vehicles must stay stopped until the bus resumes m otion.
Sometimes a school bus driver must do a turn-around. The bus will have its four-way hazard lights and backup lights on as it prepares to back into a side street or driveway to turn around. Use caution when approaching a bus in the process of completing a turn-around.

Guidelines for Determining Driver-designated Place of Safety

Chapter 3301-83 of the Administrative Code contains operation and safety rules regulating pupil transportation and governs all pupil transportation in Ohio. These rules pertain to both safety and administrative procedures for pupil transportation. Compliance with these rules is mandated under Ohio
Revised Code 4511.76.

Within this chapter are rules specific to a driver-designated place of safety for students who are loading or unloading from school buses. The primary reference is in Section 3301-83-13 B6, and reads as follows: “Each pupil shall be assigned a residence side designated place of safety. Driver must account for each pupil at designated place of safety before leaving. Pupils are not to proceed to their residence until the school bus has departed.”

In section 3301-83-08 C2, additional language states: “Pupils must wait in a location clear of traffic and away from the bus stop.”

The purpose of the place of safety is to reduce as much as possible the potential of a student being hit by a school bus while he/she is in the process of being picked up or dropped off. While the code cited above does not further define a “designated place of safety,” a standard of teaching has been developed within the pre-service program that all bus drivers are required to participate in. The following principles are being taught to bus drivers as reflective of “best practice.”

1. The place of safety should be at least 20 or more steps away from the bus stop. (Drivers are instructed to teach ‘steps’ instead of feet so that the distance will be readily understood by all ages of students being transported.)

2. The place of safety should be far enough away from the bus so that the bus can proceed without any chance of the student running back into the path of school bus as it leaves the designated stop.

3. When possible, the driver should choose a stationary and recognizable object – such as a flag pole, garage door, or sign post.

4. The place of safety should be such that a driver can account for the location of the child before moving the bus. At stops with multiple students, a place of safety should be identified where each student can be seen.

Eastland/Fairfield Career Center:

Walnut Township Schools (Millersport) will be providing the shuttle bus to Eastland/Fairfield Career Center for the 2010/2011 school year. The bus will leave LUHS at 7:05 a.m. and will return students back to LUHS in the afternoon.   Vocational students do not need to ride the shuttle bus in the mornings to ride the bus home in the afternoon. If a student needs a ride from LUHS to home in the afternoon, please call the district office for further details.

Winter Weather Delays -

All buses will follow Liberty Union weather delays in addition to the following:

Eastland/Fairfield Career Center Bussing will follow Walnut Twp weather delays.

Outside of the district - bussing will follow the appropriate school weather delay unless Liberty Union is closed due to weather.

If Liberty Union Schools is closed due to weather, there will be no bussing.
