Dear parent or guardian,
The Fairfield Department of Health has determined that it is necessary to delay the start of in-school
H1N1 vaccination clinics. It was our sincere hope that vaccine would be readily available in the
community at the time we had planned to start school clinics the beginning of November. That is not the
case. The shipment and production of the H1N1 vaccine has been slowed down due to high demand for
the vaccine. Unfortunately, as a result, we do not have the vaccine availability to take care of all the
children in schools at this time.
We had to make the difficult decision to delay the start of the school located clinics. This was a
Fairfield Department of Health decision and not the school districts’. Instead, we had to break the
high risk groups into additional categories as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization
Practices (who provides guidance to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention). To date, we have
been vaccinating those who are at higher risk for H1N1 influenza like pregnant women and health care
workers.
We also want to thank our local school districts that are working with us. It is our hope that the vaccine
production and shipment will continue to arrive in our county so we can reschedule the in-school clinics.
In the future you may also be able to find vaccine through other providers such as retail pharmacies.
Continue to watch our website,

for updates.
Our plan is to hold a community Tier I vaccination clinic at the River Valley Mall in Lancaster on
November 7 from 9 a m to 1 pm and again November 14 from 9 am to 1 pm for high risk residents
including: pregnant women, health care workers, those caring for infants under the age of six months,
children six months to four years of age, and children five to 18 years of age with chronic medical
conditions. These clinics will be first-come first serve only as vaccine is available. We hope future
clinics can expand to additional high risk groups as vaccine becomes available.
We thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Frank Hirsch, Health Commissioner
