SPRING
GOLF NEWS
-2007-
AT LIBERTY UNION |
The 71st Masters has been won by a
“regular guy” on the PGA Tour. Zach Johnson is not a household
name, not even to some golf fans. Somewhat of a “late bloomer,”
he was not even the “number one” man on his high school golf
team. Johnson whipped the more recognizable “Lefty,” “Easy Ernie,”and “Tiger”. Johnson’s Green Jacket is a shot of fresh
air for golf and gives encouragement to the dreams and
aspirations of all those middle school, high school, college,
and Nationwide Tour linksters.
The Varsity Boys Golf
Team is preparing for its 32nd season (29th at the Estate Club).
These preparations include numerous summer tournaments offered
to junior players and team members should stay in contact with
their coaches for information on these opportunities.
We have been fortunate
to keep Brian Simpson on board and he will continue to bring his
expertise to the Program by coaching the JV team.
Plans for the 18th
LU-Mark Wylie Memorial Scramble on Saturday, August 4th, are
underway. (Mark your calendar.) Lion linksters will participate
in their 13th year of community service in their spring-fall
“Adopt-A-Road” campaign.
The LUMS-Ralph Reed
Memorial Summer League is readying its 11th clinic and nine-team
“shotgun” schedule in June and July. A team of the more advanced
players from this summer league will become members of the LU
Middle School Lion Pride, a club team entering its 7th season.
The Girls Varsity Golf
Team is planning its 9th season and invites any interested young
ladies to contact Coach Harold Lloyd for more information.
Player-parent meetings
for high school boys’ and girls’ teams will be held in May.
Dates and times will be announced over the PA system at school
and published in the local papers. (These meetings are extremely
important and facilitate completion of season organization.)
Also, during May,
interested middle school boys and girls grades 5-9 (school year
2007-2008) will be informed over the PA system at school when
they can pick up application forms for the summer league at
Pleasant Valley. This is a league for players of all skills and
is preceded by a clinic sponsored by varsity players.
(Attendance is strongly encouraged. Stations will be provided to
promote safety, fundamentals and fair play.) The first 36
qualified players to return the required application will be
placed on the nine four-player teams. Additional applicants will
go on the much-used substitute roster to fill in for vacations
and other summer activities that may prevent a regular from
playing. League play is during June and July, two times per
week, with “shotgun” tee times at 9:00 A.M. A round takes
approximately two hours. Parent volunteers remain the backbone
of the league’s success as they manage player check-in and
supervise on the course. (Player application forms request
parent sign-ups for league-play supervision.)
Junior golfers and
parents are also advised for the variety of lessons available
and of the exceptional opportunity for age-appropriate
tournament play offered by five area course and the Fairfield
County Junior Golf Association during the early summer.
Membership applications will be available at those golf courses
and from Coach Reed and Coach Lloyd. Other junior summer
tourneys are available and players can obtain applications from
a coach or at local golf courses.
Finally, the high
school boys’ and girls’ teams and coaches would like to publicly
express their gratitude to the Athletic Boosters Club for their
continued support. Team and individual awards are furnished by
the Boosters and new team golf bags are provided every four
years. (The Boosters have purchased team bags for over 20
years.) Golfers and their parents continue to assist the
Boosters by setting up for bingo, providing bingo workers and by
selling memberships in the residential and business communities
during the annual August “Tag Day.”
Questions regarding any
of the above golf new items can be direct to H.S. Boys’ Golf
Coach Jim Reed, at 862-4216 or H.S. Girls’ Golf Coach Harold
Lloyd, at 740-407-4857.
See you on the tee!
