Physical Education Newsletter April
Grades 2-4: This month students will be participating in baseball (wiffle ball) and soccer. They will be learning the rules and skills of both sports. Skills for baseball (wiffle ball) students will learn are overhand throwing, catching with both hands, striking ball with bat, and running bases the correct way. Skills for soccer students will learn are trapping the ball, inside of foot pass, dribbling ball with all sides of the foot, diamond offense, and shooting at the goal. Social Integration – demonstrates appropriate behaviors in the classroom, cooperation in group activities, understands the value of equipment, and demonstrates concerns for others, exhibits physically active lifestyle, participates in physical activities outside of school that are interesting, engaging, and personally enjoyable
Grades K-1: This month students will be working on Locomotor Skills during their warm ups (walking, galloping, sliding, jumping, hopping, etc.) Equipment Manipulation – will be focused on activities using jump ropes and hula hoops. Students will create obstacle courses using jump ropes, hula hoops and other equipment to challenge their agility. Social Interactions – Sharing, respect of self and others, cooperation, exhibits physically active lifestyle, participation, outside play, and understanding the benefits of physical activity, participates in physical activity outside of school setting.
A key element that contributes to student success and well-being is safety. While in PE class, students need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Clothing should be conducive to movement. Our recommendation is for students to wear athletic shoes, however, if your child does not have athletic shoes, it is important that the shoes your child wears has laces or velcro style straps. It is also important that shoes have a back that goes over their heels and rubber soles are essential.
