LUMS Author Visit

On February 27th, 2019, the Liberty Union Middle School students had a special surprise. They were visited by award-winning author, Shelley Pearsall. Shelley Pearsall has written many books such as Trouble Don't Last, All Of The Above, The Seventh Most Important Thing, Crooked River, Jump Into The Sky and All Shook Up. The previous day, students had read All Of The Above in one day totaling 238 pages in all. The book was about some middle school misfits from a seemingly dead-end school who worked together to overcome even bigger obstacles. A tetrahedron, which is a pyramid that when combined creates a bigger pyramid, plays a key part in a book as the students assemble a record-breaking one. Each grade 5-8 at LUMS created the biggest tetrahedron that they could. The whole school then later combined their tetrahedrons to create giant tetrahedrons. In each subject, teachers and students made extra connections to themes in the book such as meeting a guest who served in Vietnam, creating Fractal Tetrahedrons in science,Color connections in Art, Math work with tetrahedrons, Jazz in Music classes and they were even treated to a special lunch that replicated “Willy Q’s BBQ,” a popular restaurant in the book. Mrs. Pearsall shared with the students how she wrote the book, how to publish work, what to do with rejections and even writing strategies.  Moreover, Shelley Pearsall was a treat to all, and she loved the students and our school.
