EXTENDED SCHOOL CLOSURE & HOUSE BILL 197 NEW

Governor Mike DeWine announced yesterday that the school building closure and move to remote learning that was scheduled to end on April 3rd, will now be extended to May 1st. The school district will continue our current distance learning educational plan. We will also continue food service as described in the fifth section of this document.

Last week, Governor DeWine signed House Bill 197 into law.  This law allows schools some flexibility regarding a variety of issues related to compliance and legal mandates.  One issue that many students and parents have asked about is state testing.  House Bill 197 did eliminate testing for the spring of 2020. The House Bill also provides some guidance to school administration on graduation for Seniors.

The details of these two pieces of information are posted on the Ohio Department of Education website: http://education.ohio.gov/Media/Ed-Connection/March-30-2020/Governor-Mike-DeWine-announces-extension-of-school

TECHNOLOGY HELP NEW

Need help with the technology resources your students are using at home like Kami, iReady, Read and Write for Google, etc?  The district’s Technology Instructional Coach, Kelley Savage, will be making video tutorials on these resources and posting them daily Monday through Friday. These tutorials will be posted on the Liberty Union website in the middle column entitled News & Announcements: http://www.libertyunion.org/

COMPUTER ASSISTANCE NEW

If you are having trouble with your school issued Chromebook, please contact John LaBelle at [email protected] to make a repair appointment.  Mr. LaBelle will complete minor repairs, troubleshoot errors, and switch out devices if needed.  To ensure that there are not too many people in the high school building at one time, and that we have the necessary parts for repair, you must make an appointmentFor your appointment time, you will enter the high school at the main entrance where you will be buzzed in and Mr. LaBelle will meet you.

FACILITIES ARE CLOSED NEW

There have been questions about whether or not the external school facilities, such as the track, are open.   This is a reiteration that ALL school facilities are closed at this time except for food service curbside on Mondays and by appointment for computer assistance.  Because closing the school facilities to the public is not something we usually do, securing the facilities with chains or locks is a task that district personnel are currently working to complete.  Please note that just because the facility might be unlocked, that it is still closed.  Thank you for your assistance with this matter.

FOOD SERVICE

=        Free meal food service is continuing for children up to age 18.

=        We will offer WEEKLY meal pick up on MONDAYs only.

=        Pick up time is 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.

=        Curbside pick-up will still be held at the back of the middle school building.

=        The Thurston pick up location is the same and will be from 4:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M.

=        The district will not be responsible for monitoring food allergies during this time. However, if your child has a severe allergy to peanut butter, please let us know, as we will routinely be using Uncrustables.

=        If you plan to participate in the weekly curbside pickup, please contact Jan Friedrich with the number of children in your home at [email protected] or text 614-579-8807 in order for us to better serve your students.

PARENT RESOURCES

=        Each week all parents will receive an email from our school counselors with resources that might be helpful during this extended distance learning time period.

=        The first email was sent out on March 25th.  If you did not get the emailed resources, please email [email protected] so that she can add your name to the parent list.

COMMUNICATION

=        All teachers are being asked to reach out to students (and parents) when academic progress in not being made. After five days and three attempts at communication, if there is no response, student names will be given to school administration to begin the proper attendance check/truancy filing procedures.

=        All Liberty Union staff email accounts, follow this format: [email protected]

OPERATIONS AND BUILDING ACCESS

o   District Office: [email protected]

=        All athletic facilities, including outdoor locations, are closed.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT GOOGLE ACCOUNTS

=        Students should be accessing their educational materials using their Google accounts. Even if students are using their own devices (PCs, laptops, MacBooks, phones, etc.), they should login to their Google accounts.

=        Logging into their Google accounts will help the district report attendance. Also, the district filters are in place to keep our students safe while utilizing the Internet.

=        Online meetings with teachers should take place using Google Meets.  Click HERE for a Google Meets Cheat Sheet

Sincerely,
